Sweltering Cities is expanding our Board of Directors

Sweltering Cities is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) to join our Board of Directors and to support and guide the work of Sweltering Cities.

Sweltering Cities works directly with communities in our hottest suburbs to campaign and advocate for more liveable, equitable and sustainable cities.

Heatwaves are Australia’s deadliest environmental disaster and cause more deaths than all other disasters combined. This environmental injustice affects some of our cities’ poorest and most marginalised communities – those with fewest resources to keep themselves and their families cool and safe.

We will empower communities experiencing extreme heat by lifting up their stories of lived experience and by building community organising campaigns around local impacts and public health. This will increase political pressure for climate justice, adaptation and mitigation which will make communities safer, decarbonise our cities and grow and diversify the movement for climate action.

Working at the intersection of health, economic injustice and climate change, we aim to:

  • win community campaigns to create sustainable, liveable and resilient cities – campaigns with solutions and strategies that can be repeated and applied across the country;
  • put the voices of people most affected by extreme heat in our cities front and centre in media coverage;
  • build powerful networks of diverse people and organisations, working together to mitigate and build resilience to catastrophic global warming.

What we’re looking for

Sweltering Cities was registered as a charity with the ACNC with three members of our Board of Directors. As we’ve grown in staff size, capacity, budget and geographic reach, we are also expanding our Board of Directors to bring in additional skills, expertise and experience. We are aiming to add another one to three people to the Board at the AGM in November 2022.

We are specifically looking for people with experience and expertise in:

  • NGO Governance
  • Finance
  • Fundraising
  • Laws and regulations related to NGOs
  • Campaigning and community organising

We invite people with lived experience of extreme heat to submit an EOI, whether that’s in hot suburbs or homes of Australia or overseas. We also invite people with medical, social work, academic or other expertise related to extreme heat to apply.

Sweltering Cities celebrates the benefits of a diverse and inclusive organisation, workplace and Board. We encourage applications from women (cis and trans), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, sexuality and gender diverse people, people from diverse cultural backgrounds and people with a disability. We also encourage applications from people in Western Sydney.

There is no stipend for Board Directors, however all costs including travel and any event expenses will be covered.

The Board of Directors will meet at least every quarter, sometimes online and sometimes in-person. The AGM will take place in-person in Sydney.

If you would like to have a conversation about the position or have questions please email  emma@swelteringcities.org to line up a time with our Executive Director Emma, or one of our current Board Directors.

If you would like to submit an expression of interest, please send an email to emma@swelteringcities.org with the subject ‘Board of Directors EOI’ and a statement of at least 100 words covering your interest in the organisation and what skills and experience you would bring to the Board.

The deadline for EOIs is August 31st 2022
