Fairfield Climate Fete: Cool Suburbs, Just Futures

Fairfield is recognised as one of the most heat vulnerable suburbs in NSW due to its surface temperatures, low tree canopy coverage, and socioeconomic and demographic data. We know that decisive government action can help create cooler, sustainable, and more equitable neighbourhoods for everyone. This is why Sweltering Cities, alongside groups such as Democracy in Colour, AYCC, and Uniting Climate Action Network, hosted our first ever Climate Fete in Fairfield.

Our first community climate fete, hosted in Fairfield!

Recap of our South West Sydney Climate Fete

Together we crafted, swapped clothes, learnt about local climate initiatives, and took tangible action to create a climate-safe future for South West Sydney. More than 50 people, many of whom had never been to a climate event before, joined us at the Fete!

The Climate Fete was designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of how much prior knowledge or involvement people may have surrounding climate change. We combined fun, craft activities (such as collaging and designing your own climate-safe sticker world) with ways to learn about and take action on local climate issues, including an MP letter writing 101 session. We were also joined by other climate advocacy groups, like the Knitting Nanas, Veilomani Project, and Tabiea.

It was a lively day, filled with conversations, connections, and most of all, enthusiasm for more community gatherings like this across Western Sydney. Subscribe to our mailing list and follow us on social media to be the first to hear about them!

A massive thank you to everyone who came along and to all of the incredible event organisers, including our volunteers Nitara and Yeng!
