We’re hiring: Community Campaigner – Western Australia

Location: Perth, WA
Contract Type: Part-time (3-4 days per week by negotiation), 6-month fixed-term contract with the possibility of extension.
Salary: $74,100 – $78,095 pro rata depending on experience (plus superannuation). If this rate does not meet your expectations but you’re interested in the role, please get in touch for a conversation with our Executive Director.

About Sweltering Cities
Sweltering Cities is a national organisation advocating for more livable, sustainable, and equitable cities and homes in the face of rising temperatures. We work alongside communities impacted by extreme heat to put community voice and experiences at the heart of better policy making. We work at the intersection of health, inequality and climate change.

We are now expanding our work to Western Australia, building relationships and supporting advocacy for communities in Perth and surrounding areas. In order to do that successfully, we know that we need a person with local knowledge and experience and connections in the local community to guide this work from day one. 


About the Role
The Community Campaigner will lead Sweltering Cities’ engagement and advocacy work in Western Australia, focusing on empowering local communities to tackle extreme heat and its impacts. This role involves organising events, building partnerships, and supporting campaigns that drive heat resilience and climate justice.
Sweltering Cities works primarily with communities in hot homes and suburbs, but we also know that communities across WA are impacted by extreme temperatures in different ways. Considering the length of the engagement and resources available, this role is intended to be focussed on the Perth area however we will work with the successful candidate to identify specific scope and opportunities.

You’ll work closely with the Sweltering Cities team and local stakeholders to amplify community voices and push for meaningful and tangible change. The focus of this role will be sharing local stories of heat health impacts and community engagement. 


Key Responsibilities

  • Community Engagement: Build relationships with community groups, residents, and local leaders in Perth and surrounding areas to understand their experiences with extreme heat. This will involve outreach to Sweltering Cities existing contacts, and growing our local network. 
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work with partners to drive policy and systemic change.
  • Event Coordination: Organise public events and activities to raise awareness and gather community input.
  • Advocacy: Amplify the voices of communities impacted by extreme heat, ensuring their perspectives inform policies and planning.
  • Sharing local stories: Work with local community members to share stories of how longer, hotter summers are impacting them. 
  • Communications: Share updates through social media, email updates and public presentations to build momentum and engage supporters.


About You
We’re looking for someone with:

  • A passion for climate justice, sustainability, and social equity.
  • Experience in community organising, advocacy, or campaigning.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain respectful relationships with diverse community members and organisations.
  • Confidence working independently and managing multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge of Western Australia’s social, political, and environmental landscape (preferred).
  • Knowledge of the impacts of extreme heat and rising temperatures. This can be academic knowledge, knowledge from lived experience or knowledge from work experience. 
  • Confidence in organising community events
  • High level written and verbal communications skills
  • Experience working independently
