We’ve just launched our 2023 Summer Survey; the largest survey on heat, health and homes in Australia. We are currently experiencing a summer of heatwaves, and we need to be telling powerful stories that can drive real action for communities across Australia.
Across Australia, communities are facing a baking hot summer. Only one week into summer, it reached 43° in parts of Western Sydney, and we know it will be even hotter as summer goes on.
Last time we ran the survey we reached over 2000 people across the country in over 700 unique postcodes. People like you shared their stories of summer heat, like this one:
“The days are longer when its hot and you cant find solace. I am prone to melanoma and skin cancers so my social life in summer is non existent as I cant go outside during hot daylight hours. Work is difficult as its hot getting to work and very hot in the classrooms and playground”
They also shared great ideas for cooler, more liveable suburbs like:
“Every house needs at least one tree on the footpath. It helps shade neighbouring houses based on the movements of the sun throughout the day as well as shading the road that is dark coloured and very hot.”
Stories like these then helped us put the results in the news like this one from Western Sydney in The Sydney Morning Herald.
Even if you did the survey last time, we’ve updated the questions and we still want to hear from you. This year we have a focus on cost of living impacts and heatwave emergencies.
2022’s survey painted a powerful picture of how COVID-19 affected people’s heatwave plans. This year, we want to know what support would make a real, positive difference for you and those around you to reduce the dangerous health impacts of extreme heat.
Our goal is to receive 2000 responses from all corners of Australia, matching the success of last year’s survey, and we know this is possible! If each of us take five minutes to fill in the survey, we know we can reach our goal.
