We’re Hiring: Part-time Communications and Campaigning Roles

Sweltering Cities is looking for new team members who can help us reach more communities, grow our audience and support campaigns for cooler cities and safer homes this summer. Rather than recruiting for a specific position, we’re looking for a range of skills. If you think you’re a good fit for some of the skills and experience we’re looking for, but not others, we still want to hear from you. We’ll be filling roles as they become available so please send us your information and well reach out if there’s one that’s a good fit or to have a conversation.

There are roles with a communications and storytelling focus available starting before the end of 2023, so if that sounds like you please get in touch! We will update this post or create new ads when more information becomes available.

Communications

This includes the following responsibilities:

  • working with our supporters and contacts to share their stories of living in hot suburbs or hot homes as community spokespeople
  • helping us grow our  audience on social media
  • designing and copywriting for social media content

Community Campaigner

This includes the following responsibilities:

  • outreach to new supporters and volunteers to connect them to local networks and campaign activities (by phone, email and in person)
  • organising and recruiting people to attend our events in hot suburbs
  • working and collaborating with community and advocacy organisations
  • supporting ongoing summer survey and temperature monitoring work
  • working with our volunteers

Desirable knowledge and experience for all roles:

  • knowledge of heat health impacts and how inequality impacts heatwave safety
  • good familiarity with the geography and politics of Western Sydney
  • knowledge or awareness of how extreme heat impacts multicultural communities
  • experience working with diverse communities
  • experience using Canva, Action Network, WordPress and social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter/X

At the moment, we’re looking for people for part time roles for 3 to 6 months. All roles will pay between $37.50 and $42 per hour ($74,100 – $83,000 pro rata, plus 11% superannuation) depending on role and experience. If you’re interested but these details don’t meet your expectations, please get in touch for a discussion with our Executive Director. New roles will become available pending funding and we’ll be contacting people who we think are a great fit as roles come up over summer.

Flexible work days by negotiation with occasional weekend or evening work. These roles would suit people who want to work some set hours and some flexible hours each week.

Sweltering Cities celebrates the benefits of a diverse and inclusive workplace. We encourage applications from women (cis and trans), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, sexuality and gender diverse people, people with disabilities and people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

To let us know you’re interested, please send us:

  • a statement (minimum 150 words) of why you would like to work with us, what role you would be best suited for and why you would be a great fit
  • your CV
  • if you have time requirements, eg. maximum 10 hours per week or at least 3 days
  • if you’re looking for a communications role, examples of your work that demonstrate your skills
