Sydney’s Busted Bus Stops: Read our Campaign Report

Thanks to your dedicated efforts in mapping over 2500 bus stops across, capturing photos of busted stops, and sharing personal stories about the challenges of using unsafe, unsheltered stops, Sweltering Cities has published a report with our key findings and recommendations from the Busted Bus Stops Campaign!

Here are some of our results that demonstrate the uneven distribution of bus stop infrastructure across Sydney:

Lack of accessibility features at a stop in Lidcombe
Unsheltered stop next to a school in St Mary’s

Our report includes the results of Sydney’s worst bus stop competition, community stories, infrastructure maps from different regions in Sydney, and our policy recommendations. Specifically, we urge the state government to allocate $20 million in the 2024-25 budget to install up to 2000 bus shelters in our most heat-affected suburbs, in collaboration with local councils.

The report has been covered in the Sydney Morning Herald. The article made it clear that Waiting at a bus stop should not be a health hazard. Our hottest suburbs deserve accessible and equitable public transport.

Here is our updated map with over 2500 bus stops:
